Lure Coursing with King Cheetahs in South Africa

It was an early morning but what a morning. The Cheetahs are released one at a time. They bring the Cheetahs, one at a time to the lure course area in pickup with a canopy on the back, much like a lot would travel their dogs. The lure is a few strips of heavy plastic and the lure 'wire' is a heavier cord than what we use here. The cats know the course and will occasionally short cut the run. At the finish they put a small metal dish with meat treats in it under the cats nose and when the cat is distracted from the lure they put the collar and leash back on and lead the cat back to the pickup, then back to their compound. It is so like slipping your own hounds that you could easily forget that they are such big cats. We were standing in the field with the cats, there was no barrier erected. It was really a wonderful stunning experience.
