Canines and Coyotes

By Leon V. Almirall

CoverIf you're looking for that one dog book that is a "must read" for coursing and hunting enthusiasts, this could be it. Almirall had ranches in Colorado and writes this first person account of coursing coyotes with his Borzoi, Greyhounds and various other sighthounds and lurchers. Canines and Coyotes is a book you'll have a hard time putting down. He writes in an easy style, and the photographs in this book probably won't be found anywhere else.

While many of us would be concerned about the risks involved (to his dogs, and at times to himself) he apparently coursed for years and is as candid as a rancher with much experience with animals (not necessarily pets) would be. Almiral describes in detail how the coyotes were hunted from horses and automobiles bouncing across the plains. If you're squeamish about the details of a hunt, this book may not be for you. It was written before the term "politically correct" was invented (which is, frankly, refreshing to this reviewer).

Canines and Coyotes was published in 1941 and is out of print at this time. You'll find it at online used book stores, as it is a bit of a collectible at this point.
